What is an Electronic SDS Binder?

An Electronic SDS Binder is sometimes referred to as an online SDS library. Traditionally, the library consisted of a binder with printouts of all the SDSs in use in the company. These days, very few companies use physical SDS binders as new regulations have allowed for online access to Safety Data Sheets.

How do I view GHS Labels and safety data sheets?

GHS labels and safety data sheets can be printed or downloaded. Click on the View GHS Label button at the bottom left of the summary page to open the GHS label. Click on the View SDS button at the bottom right of the summary page to open the safety data sheet. More advanced searches can be performed by populating multiple fields with data.

A GHS SDS, or Globally Harmonised System Safety Data Sheet, is a comprehensive information document about a chemical substance or mixture. SDSs are also part of the GHS for Classification and Labelling of Chemicals.

How can I obtain an SDS from a supplier?

Some suppliers will publish their SDS (MSDS) on their website where you can download them. Other suppliers will send the SDS files to you via email when you request them. All suppliers of products that contain chemicals are required by law to provide Safety Data Sheets to their customers.

When is a SDS-like information available?

SDS-like information is often available even when it is not legally required. In the EU, SDS as specified in Article 31 of the REACH regulation are legally required for chemical products.

What is an extended SDS?

An extended Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is termed 'extended SDS'. It includes several exposure scenarios, each with a free text title, such as 'use in paints and coatings' or 'use in cleaning products'. For each exposure scenario, there are 'contributing scenarios' describing conditions of safe use for the environment, workers, and consumers (where applicable).
