Should early childhood environmental education be expanded to 'early childhood education for sustainability'?

The idea of broadening “early childhood environmental education” to “early childhood education for sustainability” is being met with some reluctance. The scarcity of research on this topic from the U.S. suggests that this reluctance may be more pronounced in the U.S. than in some other countries.

What is Early Childhood Education?

In the context of ECEfS, early childhood education has been defined as formal early education and care provision for young children from birth up to the age of primary education (Bertram & Pascal, 2016).

Are ECEE and early childhood education for sustainability related?

Green's (2015) review discusses ECEE and early childhood education for sustainability as distinct, yet related fields, and includes both ECEE- and early childhood education for sustainability-related research with a focus on research methods used with young children.

Should early childhood environmental education (ECEE) be considered early childhood education?

A systematic review of scientific papers on ECEfS published between 2008 and 2020 suggests that there is a pressing need for studies that use interventional, experimental, and action research methods in this area (Güler et al., 2021). When related to the environment, ECE becomes “early childhood environmental education,” henceforth ECEE.
