Inducing Passive Nonlinear Energy Sinks in Vibrating Systems
We study the inducement of passive nonlinear sinks in linear vibrating systems. These are substructures that absorb vibrational energy in a one-way, irreversible fashion. The systems considered are composed of strongly coupled, grounded damped linear oscillators with a strongly nonlinear attachment at the end. Applying a complex averaging technique we derive a …

Vibrational Energy
Vibrational energy levels for a molecule with three normal modes are shown in Figure 8.4.The vibrational quantum numbers of each mode are given in parenthesis like (υ 1, υ 2, … υ 3 N − 6).The levels with one υ i = 1 and all vibrational quantum numbers equal to zero are called fundamental levels. For example, levels (1,0,0), (0,1,0), (0,0,1) in Figure 8.4 are called …

Frequency Analysis of Vibration Energy Harvesting Systems
Abstract. Conversion of mechanical vibration energy into electric energy could provide reliable and efficient energy utilization. Both harvested resonant power and energy efficiency have been studied based on a single degree of freedom piezoelectric vibration energy harvester of a weak electromechanical coupling and normalized in a dimensionless form where the effect of the …
Vibrational energy transfer in coupled mechanical systems with ...
Many recent studies have been devoted to exploiting various types of nonlinearities for performance benefits in vibration suppression [24].For example, nonlinear vibration isolators with geometric nonlinearity can have a high-static-low-dynamic characteristic, providing performance enhancement compared with that of conventional linear isolators [5, 6, …
Types of Vibration: Free, Forced, and Damped …
Vibration is a mechanical phenomenon causing oscillations around a fixed point. The vibration occurs when elastic bodies, like springs, are displaced from their equilibrium (fixed) positions due to external forces.. This is …

Harvesting Vibration Energy: Technologies and Challenges
The battery is probably the most commonly used power supply for electronic devices. However, batteries are gradually becoming insufficient for powering many of the emerging devices that have started to dominate our lives, such as portable electronics, wearable smart devices, and wireless sensor networks. The general reason for this insufficiency is the high cost of replacing the …

Despite the obvious advantages of NES applications over their linear and weakly nonlinear counterparts, some drawbacks also exist. The main drawback common to systems containing nonlinearities is the existence of additional branches of periodic regimes that may be disastrous for vibration absorption.
Enhanced vibration energy harvesting using dual-mass systems
The dashed line in Fig. 3 shows the optimal ζ e opt (α) at different excitation frequency as indicated by Eq. (7).We see that the optimal electrical damping ζ e opt (α) is larger than the mechanical damping ζ m unless the excitation frequency is the same of the undamped natural frequency. If the excitation is 5% larger or smaller than the system natural frequency, …

The marine propeller shaft serves as a power delivery device that is exposed to both the time-varying pulse power from the propeller and the unbalanced rotor cycle of the main engine (Zhang et al., 2014; Zou et al., 2017).The most significant form of vibration experienced by the shaft is transverse vibration caused by unbalanced structural mass and component force …
Vibration
Vibration (from Latin vibrāre ''to shake'') is a mechanical phenomenon whereby oscillations occur about an equilibrium point.Vibration may be deterministic if the oscillations can be characterised precisely (e.g. the periodic motion of a pendulum), or random if the oscillations can only be analysed statistically (e.g. the movement of a tire on a gravel road).

Producing Energy from Vibrations
Transforming vibration energy to electrical energy is known as Vibration Energy Harvesting. The concept is simple. Hypothetically, all vibration energy can be transformed into electrical energy; but there are certain types of vibrations that are preferred when the intent is to power a sensor or monitoring system.
Vibration Isolation
Vibration attenuation is obtained for input frequencies greater than 2 times the natural frequency of the isolation system, and this is true for all values of damping. For input frequencies below 2 times the natural frequency, and especially those close to the natural frequency, the vibration level of the mass is actually increased compared with that of the base.
Vibration System
Micro mechanical gyroscopes developed so far are exclusively vibratory gyroscopes. A simplified model for a vibratory gyroscope is shown in Fig. 1.14.The system is a two-dimensional vibration system with two orthogonal vibration modes. One vibration mode corresponds to the vibration of the mass in the x-direction.The vibration frequency of the vibration mode is ω x.
